On April 17, 2019, the faculty approved a proposal to modify MIT’s academic calendar to accommodate a change in Commencement timing. Starting in 2020, Commencement ceremonies will take place in late May, instead of early June, in most years. The Hooding and Commencement ceremonies in 2020 will be held on May 28 and 29, respectively.
The vote follows months of community dialogue, starting in fall 2018, which focused on exploring options to move Commencement closer to the end of final exams. An MIT News story provides an overview of the reasoning for the changes and outlines the impact on the academic calendar moving forward. Answers to common questions are available in the FAQs.
